What is the subconscious mind?
Think of the subconscious mind as if it was like a massive memory bank within your head. It's always taking in and saving the environmental and internal information for you, with virtually no limits in storage space.
This means that the overall function of your subconscious mind is storing and retrieving data. Which will allow you to respond correctly based on your mental and emotional programming.
Your self-concept is the guiding structure of your subconscious mind and it seeks to make everything that you say and do consistent with this “master program.”. You can change this by repeating positive affirmations, slipping in success-focused sound bites, that effectively reprogram your thought patterns.
This pattern is subjective; meaning that it does reason independently, but merely obeys the dictates of your conscious mind.
1. Over 94% of your life is controlled by your Subconscious Mind
Neuroscience has shown that most of our actions, decisions and emotions depend on the 95% of our brain activity that lies beyond conscious awareness. Meaning that 95% (or as much as 99%) of your life comes from the programming in your subconscious mind.
2. Running routine functions
Your subconscious mind never sleeps because it controls all vital processes and functions of the body. In sleep our conscious mind becomes dormant while the subconscious mind stays fully awake. Science shows that we still hear and process everything even while your conscious mind slumbers.
3. Completely habit-based
As we go about our daily routine we form autonomic habits. We are able to do this because we process information quickly and without being conscious of most of it. This is the unconscious mind at work. Just like how plants grow in response to their environment without conscious thought, your subconscious mind guides you throughout the day on well-worn routines.
4. Never gets the joke
The subconscious mind takes everything literally. It cannot differentiate between negative and positive self-talk. So when you say “I can’t do this!” your subconscious mind is listening and making sure that your thoughts and actions are aligned with your words. As Henry Ford said, “if you think you can, or if you think you can’t, you’re right!”
Whether you dream about the future or are getting hung up on the past, that's your conscious mind at work. The conscious mind thinks of the past and future. The subconscious mind is constantly focused on the present moment; what is happening and how it is impacting your body. Mindfulness practices are so popular these days, because they teach us how to stay connected to the here and now and positively impact our central nervous system (CNS).
I know that there are many more than just 5 things to know about this powerful aspect of your brain. Psychology and neurology are constantly searching for more information. As the research becomes available, I'll create new blogs to keep you updated on the power of your subconscious mind.
